Can You Adopt a Celestial Body?

You can’t legally claim a real star as yours, as celestial bodies are governed by international laws. However, if you're looking to adopt a celestial body without owning it, you can do so online. Your chosen name will be recorded in the Celestial Name Database, one of the oldest registries in the world.

If you're searching for a meaningful, yet affordable gift, adopting a celestial body could be the perfect choice. It's a thoughtful way to show someone you care and appreciate their presence in your life. This special gift carries deep significance without taking up physical space or requiring any upkeep.

When you adopt a stellar piece of the Universe, you have the chance to choose and name it however you wish. While no one can legally own stars or other celestial bodies, we developed one of the largest private star registries to permanently record your chosen name. Make it part of a unique gift set and share it with someone special.

Can you adopt a celestial object for free?

While many things in this world can be obtained for free, naming a star typically isn't one of them. Some companies and organizations offer star naming or often called “star buying” or “star adoption” services with a free certificate, but these often come with limitations.

Typically, you might be assigned a white dwarf or neutron star, and most of the time, you won't get accurate coordinates. Without precise coordinates, locating your star in the night sky becomes nearly impossible. Even if you manage to identify your free adopted stellar entity, there’s no guarantee it will be visible from the recipient’s location due to its low brightness.

It's important to note that these services are often more about fun and novelty than offering a genuine celestial experience, as they do not provide official documentation or precise star’s location.

If you are interested in supporting astronomy research or educational programs, some opportunities involve adopting a celestial body as a charitable contribution. While this won’t provide you with a free star naming, it will support valuable initiatives. Investing in astronomy research or charitable efforts can be a meaningful way to contribute to a good cause, making a positive impact rather than spending on something meaningless.
